Understanding NDIS Medium Term Accommodation

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is an NDIS-funded support that provides temporary housing for up to 90 days. It bridges the gap between your current living situation and your long-term accommodation goals — whether you’re waiting for Supported Independent Living (SIL) placement, recovering after a hospital stay, or need stable housing while home modifications are completed.

Who is MTA For?

MTA is designed for NDIS participants who need transitional housing in situations such as:

  • Waiting for a permanent SIL vacancy
  • Transitioning from hospital or rehabilitation back to community living
  • Escaping unsafe living environments while alternatives are arranged
  • Waiting for home modifications to be completed
  • Moving interstate and needing temporary accommodation while settling in

How is MTA Different from Respite (STA)?

Respite Care (STA) provides short-term breaks of up to 14 days — planned relief for participants and carers. MTA is longer-term (up to 90 days) and specifically addresses transitional housing needs. Both include accommodation and support, but they serve fundamentally different purposes.

  2. Your coordinator will submit a request to the NDIA demonstrating why MTA is necessary
  3. Once approved, your coordinator helps you find a suitable MTA provider
