What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded support that helps participants with significant daily support needs to live as independently as possible. In Adelaide and across South Australia, SIL provides 24/7 or rostered support in shared or individual living arrangements — giving participants the freedom to live in their own home with qualified assistance.
Unlike in-home care (which provides a few hours of support), SIL is a comprehensive living arrangement where trained support workers assist with daily routines, personal care, household tasks, community access, and skill development throughout the day and night.
Who Is Eligible for SIL in Adelaide?
SIL is available to NDIS participants who:
- Have significant support needs that require regular or continuous assistance
- Have SIL funding approved in their NDIS plan (under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life)
- Want to live independently but need daily support to do so safely
- Are transitioning from family home, hospital, or other accommodation
Your support coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can help you apply for SIL funding if it’s not already in your plan. Evidence of your support needs — such as allied health assessments or functional capacity evaluations — strengthens your case.

How Much Does SIL Cost?
SIL is funded through your NDIS plan under Core Supports. The cost depends on:
- Your support ratio (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, etc.)
- Hours of support required (e.g., 24/7 vs rostered hours)
- Whether you need active overnight or sleepover support
- Complexity of your support needs
The NDIS sets standard price limits for SIL. Your support coordinator will work with you and your chosen provider to determine the right model and ensure it fits within your plan funding.
How to Get SIL in Your NDIS Plan
- Speak to your support coordinator — discuss your current living situation and what support you need
- Gather evidence — occupational therapy assessments, behaviour support plans, or medical reports that demonstrate your daily support needs
- Request a plan review — if SIL isn’t in your current plan, request a reassessment through your LAC or the NDIA
- Choose a provider — research registered SIL providers in Adelaide (look for clinical capability, staff qualifications, and participant reviews)
- Transition planning — your provider will work with you to plan the move and set up your support schedule
