If you’ve recently received your NDIS plan, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is how your funding will be managed. NDIS plan management explained simply: there are three options, and each one affects how you pay for services, which providers you can use, and how much paperwork you’ll handle. Understanding these options helps you get the most out of your plan from day one.

At Destiny Community Services, we work with participants across all three management types in Adelaide, Riverland, Tasmania, and NSW. This guide breaks down each option in plain language so you can choose what works best for your situation.

What Are the Three NDIS Plan Management Types?

Every NDIS participant’s funding is managed in one of three ways. You can even split your plan across different management types for different support categories. Here’s what each one means:

1. NDIA-Managed (Agency-Managed)

The National Disability Insurance Agency manages your funding directly. The NDIA pays your providers on your behalf after they submit a claim through the NDIS portal.

  • You can only use registered NDIS providers
  • Providers claim directly from your plan through the NDIS portal
  • You don’t handle invoices or payments
  • Prices are capped at the NDIS Price Guide rates
  • Least amount of paperwork for you

Best for: Participants who prefer a hands-off approach and are comfortable using registered providers only.

2. Plan-Managed

A registered plan manager handles your funding on your behalf. They process invoices, track your budget, and make payments to your providers. You choose the plan manager, and they’re funded through a separate line item in your NDIS plan.

  • You can use both registered and unregistered providers
  • Your plan manager handles all invoices and payments
  • You get regular budget statements so you know where your funding stands
  • Prices are still guided by the NDIS Price Guide, but there’s more flexibility
  • The plan manager’s fee comes from your plan (it doesn’t reduce your other funding)

Best for: Participants who want more provider choice without the paperwork of self-management.

3. Self-Managed

You manage your own NDIS funding. You pay providers directly (or reimburse yourself), keep records of all transactions, and submit payment requests to the NDIA.

  • You can use any provider, including unregistered ones
  • You negotiate prices directly with providers
  • You handle all invoicing, record-keeping, and payment claims
  • Maximum flexibility and control over your supports
  • You’re responsible for ensuring services meet NDIS guidelines

Best for: Participants (or their families) who are confident managing budgets and want the widest possible choice of providers and pricing.

How Does NDIS Plan Management Affect Your Provider Choice?

Your management type directly affects which providers you can access:

Management TypeRegistered ProvidersUnregistered ProvidersPrice Flexibility
NDIA-ManagedYesNoNDIS Price Guide only
Plan-ManagedYesYesSome flexibility
Self-ManagedYesYesFull flexibility

As a registered NDIS provider, Destiny Community Services can support you regardless of which management type you have. Whether your plan is NDIA-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed, you can access our full range of services including community nursing, supported independent living, personal care, and support coordination.

Can You Change Your NDIS Plan Management Type?

Yes. You can request a change to your plan management type at your next plan review, or you can request an early plan review if your current arrangement isn’t working. Many participants start with NDIA-managed funding and later move to plan-managed or self-managed as they become more familiar with the NDIS.

If you’re unsure which option suits you best, our support coordination team can help you understand the practical differences and make an informed decision.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming plan management costs you money: Plan management is funded through a separate budget category. It doesn’t reduce your other NDIS funding.
  • Thinking you’re locked in: You can change your management type at your next plan review or request an early review.
  • Not keeping records (self-managed): If you self-manage, keep every invoice and receipt. The NDIA can audit your spending at any time.
  • Confusing plan management with support coordination: A plan manager handles your money. A support coordinator helps you find and connect with the right services. They’re different roles funded from different budget categories.

Frequently Asked Questions About NDIS Plan Management

What is the difference between plan-managed and self-managed NDIS?

With plan-managed NDIS, a registered plan manager handles your invoices, payments, and budget tracking on your behalf. With self-managed NDIS, you handle all of this yourself. Both options allow you to use registered and unregistered providers, but self-managed gives you full control over pricing negotiations and provider selection.

Does plan management reduce my NDIS funding?

No. Plan management is funded through a separate budget line item called “Improved Life Choices.” The cost of your plan manager does not come out of your other support categories such as core supports or capacity building.

Can I have different management types for different parts of my NDIS plan?

Yes. You can split your plan so that some budget categories are NDIA-managed while others are plan-managed or self-managed. For example, you might self-manage your core supports but have your capacity building funding plan-managed. Discuss this with your NDIS planner or support coordinator.

How do I change my NDIS plan management type?

You can request a change to your plan management type at your scheduled plan review, or you can contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to request an early review. Your support coordinator can help you prepare for this conversation and explain the practical implications of each option.
